Reading for Pleasure
Reading for pleasure is much more than a relaxing pastime; it is an important part of children’s learning and wellbeing. When primary-aged children choose to read books they enjoy, they develop stronger vocabulary, comprehension, concentration and memory, all of which support their progress across the curriculum. Not only that, but reading also helps children understand different people and experiences, encouraging empathy, imagination and confidence. Alongside these academic benefits, sharing or enjoying a book can help children feel calm, reduce stress and support positive mental health. Even a few minutes of enjoyable reading each day can help children become more capable learners, while also nurturing their emotional, social and creative development.
